The Pony Express used a series of relay stations to deliver mail across the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada to Sacramento, California by horseback. It reduced the time for messages to travel from coast to coast to about 10 days. Despite it's significance, it operated for only 18 months in 1860 and 1861, before the establishment of telegraph lines.
