Despite the antique tapestries and museum-like decor, Hearst envisioned the castle as his “ranch residence.” Meals were comprised of fine quality comfort foods, and mustard and ketchup bottles stood beside fine china and silverware. In the evening a movie, to which the servants were invited, would play in Hearst's private theater.
