Precambrian Grenville basement rocks of the Blue Ridge thrust sheet. Geologically, the Blue Ridge is a massive thrust sheet of mainly Precambrian rocks thrust westward over younger sedimentary rocks during the Paleozoic collision of ancient Africa with North America. The younger sedimentary rocks can be seen in "windows", eroded holes through the thrust sheet, in places like Cadys Cove and Grandfather Mountain.
