Avery Island is a salt dome, the largest of five along the Louisiana coast. Salt springs attracted animals and men to this high area in the marsh, and a massive salt deposit was discovered in 1862. The annual production is currently 2.5 million tons of 98.9% pure halite, the mines are depicted at lower right.
